THUNDER BAY — A Lakehead University team has been awarded $127,000 in research funding from the Ontario government.
The money is part of almost $200 million invested across the province from the Ontario Research Fund and Early Researcher Awards programs.
More than 240 research projects will be supported by the funding.
The project at Lakehead will be led by Qiang Wei, an assistant professor in electrical engineering at the Thunder Bay campus.
He and his team will investigate innovative power conversion and control for next-generation offshore wind systems.
According to a news release from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities, this initiative aims to reduce the cost and size of wind systems while improving their efficiency and reliability.
Lakehead University president Moira McPherson said clean energy production is key to creating sustainable economies and communities.
She said the funding Wei and his colleagues received "will fuel the research required to develop the clean, more efficient, energy solutions needed for the future."
