The grand opening of a new Entrepreneur Space is among the events planned next week for Cambrian College’s annual Research and Innovation Week.

The five-day event runs from March 31 to April 4 at the Barry Downe campus in Sudbury.

A college news release said this space will enable the hosting of workshops, events and provide the resources “to spark innovation and help students bring their business ideas to life.”

“Applied research has really taken off at Cambrian and it has put Sudbury on the map, so we’re very excited to showcase the work we do here,” said Mike Commito, director of Cambrian R&D, the college’s applied research division, in a statement.

“Research and Innovation Week is also a great way to celebrate the collaborations that have been key to our success. At Cambrian R&D it takes enthusiastic staff, faculty, students, and industry partners to make it all come together.”

The events on tap include guided facility tours of Cambrian R&D and the Centre for Smart Mining, a research showcase in the eDome, a student entrepreneurship workshop, and a Student Innovation Challenge where Cambrian students pitch a business idea to a judges panel for prize money.

“We’re working with industry partners who are choosing Cambrian R&D because we’re helping them meet some of the challenges they are facing now and may face in the future,” said Janneke Nicholls, Cambrian’s vice-president of applied research. “At Cambrian R&D, we’re getting noticed for the work we are doing, and it’s exciting to share those results with the community.”
