Artificial intelligence (AI) and how municipalities can use it to their advantage will be a central theme of the 2025 conference hosted by the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM).

Scheduled to take place May 5-6 in North Bay, the event is expected to draw more than 300 delegates from across northeastern Ontario, including municipal politicians, senior municipal leaders, provincial ministers, and government staff.

FONOM has announced Olya Sanakoev, the chief technology officer at Rogers Bank, will give the keynote address: Unlocking the Power of Artificial Intelligence for Municipal Innovation.

Sanakoev will speak about real-world AI applications in municipal services, from smart city solutions to predictive analytics; ethical and responsible AI use in governance, ensuring transparency and fairness; and practical steps for municipalities to adopt AI-driven solutions, even with limited resources.

Held annually, the FONOM conference is considered a key networking and learning opportunity for vendors, suppliers, and professionals to reach out to local decision-makers and show their support for Northern Ontario.
