KIRKLAND LAKE — A new mining agreement with a northern First Nation promises to bring jobs and financial benefits to the community.

Agnico Eagle and Beaverhouse First Nation formalized a new agreement for the Macassa Mine Complex during a signing ceremony in Kirkland Lake on Dec. 16.

The agreement aims to focus on sustainable development, community collaboration and reconciliation.

Andre Leite, vice-president of Ontario operations, told TimminsToday the agreement represents a significant step forward in the relationship between Beaverhouse First Nation and Agnico Eagle.

“There's a certain degree of confidentiality in this agreement. But I can say it's a mutual benefit agreement that allows us to move forward with our action plan for reconciliation,” Leite said.

“It’s an integral part to have this type of relationship with the First Nations, and will provide opportunities for employment and financial benefits to the Beaverhouse First Nation that they didn't have access to before.”

The event was attended by Beaverhouse First Nation Chief Wayne Wabie, council members, elders and representatives from Agnico Eagle, Leite said. It included speeches, gift exchanges and a gathering of approximately 30 to 40 people.

“The environment was very positive,” he said.

“The signing of this agreement represents a significant step moving forward in the relationship. This has been very positive and constructive,” Leite said.

Agnico Eagle emphasized that the agreement reflects the company’s broader approach to working with First Nations communities.

“This demonstrates our commitment to establishing long-term relationships with Indigenous communities and aligning with our values of sustainability and respect,” Leite explained.

Leite highlighted the agreement’s potential to contribute to economic development in Kirkland Lake and surrounding areas.

“Macassa Mine is a cornerstone asset for the community,” he said. “This agreement underscores our commitment to Kirkland Lake’s development and the sustainability of the mine.”

Leite also referenced future plans, including the Upper Beaver project, as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to support the region’s growth.
