Expansion and exhibit upgrades at the Timmins Underground Gold Mine Tour and the Shania Twain Centre were nearing completion in early June. A vertical people mover, known as an Alimak, is the featured new amenity for visitors touring the mine site. The vehicle is an actual piece of mining equipment, which will be used to move more tourists through the site. It is also advantageous to visitors with limited mobility. At the adjoining Shania Twain Centre, more of the singer's personal memorabilia is on display in anticipation of a visit by the former Timmins native this fall. Though construction at the site cut down on visitations last year, local officials tracking tourism traffic say 35 to 40 per cent are regional visitors, 35 to 40 per cent are from the U.S. and international places of origin, with the remainder from southern Ontario.
