Thunder Bay’s Candy Mountain Ski Resort is shutting down and its owner is concentrating its snowmaking machines at Loch Lomond Ski Area.
Owner Ward Bond, who bought the resort in the mid-1980s and tried to sell it this year, has not decided on the fate of the resort.
A group of private investors attempted to save Candy Mountain by converting it into a private resort for a membership fee, but the plan fell through. Loch Lomond and Baldy are the only two Thunder Bay area skill hills to operate this winter. Candy Mountain has been in financial trouble since December 1999 when the previous owners fell behind on lease payments and closed the resort.
Bond kept the resort open, but saw a steady decrease in business over the years, losing skiers to larger U.S. resorts.
