A Thunder Bay construction business will appeal the suspension of its licence to build new homes.

The Home Construction Regulatory Authority, the non-profit organization that regulates homebuilders and vendors in Ontario, alleges TIL-KA Construction Inc. has failed to meet its licensing requirements.

TIL-KA has been licensed since 2013.

Jered Zieroth, a director of the company, told Dougall Media it does not accept the findings of the HCRA, which said in a news release that Til-Ka has not met mandatory competency requirements necessary for maintaining a valid licence.

"We're disagreeing with their findings. We filed an appeal a week ago, and we are going through that process," Zieroth said.

According to the HCRA, while it was processing the company's annual licence renewal application last year, the authority learned that a former director and officer of the company who held the required competencies was no longer with the firm.

"As a result ... TIL-KA was missing seven core competencies," it said.

The regulator said it renewed the company's licence conditionally, and set a deadline for compliance which was not met.

But Zieroth said Tuesday TIL-KA believes it does hold the required competencies.

While the appeal process is underway through a tribunal, the company cannot build new homes but is able to continue with the other aspects of its business such as home renovations and commercial construction, as these areas are not governed by the HCRA.
