Science North is receiving $16 million in funding from the Ontario government to expand its programming and activities, which is expected to create jobs and bolster tourism to the tune of $27 million in economic benefits in Sudbury and throughout the North.
Announced on April 25, the contribution is being called an “historic level of funding” from the province.
“This is wonderful news for our audiences throughout the North, in our community and at Science North and Dynamic Earth,” CEO Guy Labine said in the release.
“Our team is driven to deliver exceptional science experiences and programs to our audiences, and the next five years will be exciting. We appreciate the confidence in our entire organization.”
Funding by the province will support eight key projects as outlined in Science North’s strategic plan:
- Vale Chasm show: described as a seasonal tour of Northern Ontario’s landscape, people, creatures and sites, which will be installed across Northern Ontario;
- THINK Project: a renewal of 50 per cent of the science centre’s fourth level;
- Object Theatre: two new multimedia experiences based on science topics such as climate change and mysteries of the universe;
- Go Deeper: an expansion of the underground experience at Dynamic Earth, highlighting modern mining and innovation;
- an expansion of science experiences across northwestern Ontario;
- Outdoor Pavilion: will support expanded programming and host functions and events;
- capital upgrades to Science North and Dynamic Earth enhancing the grounds at both sites; and
- IMAX 3D: a new film will be produced in partnership with Dr. Jane Goodall.
