Laurentian University has recognized Dr. Tammy Gaber with its Research Excellence Award for her work with the McEwen School of Architecture.

Gaber is the architecture school’s director and an associate professor whose research focuses on the study of sacred spaces and their impact on communities.

She was selected for her “outstanding and original contribution” to her field, “demonstrating academic leadership, securing external research funding, and advancing the university’s research reputation on national and international stages.”

"Dr. Gaber’s innovative research and dedication to student mentorship have made a profound impact on both students and the broader architectural community,” Dr. Tammy Eger, Laurentian’s vice-president of research, said in a news release.

“Her work continues to elevate Laurentian’s research profile on a global stage, and we celebrate her well-earned recognition.”

The acknowledgement came at the end of Laurentian’s annual Research Week, which ran Feb. 24-28.

Since joining the McEwen School of Architecture in 2013 as founding faculty, Gaber has become known for providing students with “unique and transformative learning opportunities through her research,” the school said.

She’s considered an acclaimed scholar and educator, and her work has made “significant contributions to architectural history, particularly in the study of sacred spaces and their impact on communities.”

Her 2022 book, Beyond the Divide – A Century of Canadian Mosque Design, has been called “groundbreaking,” receiving critical acclaim within the industry. It recently received an honourable mention for the Melva Dwyer Award, which recognizes creators of exceptional reference or research tools relating to Canadian art and architecture.

“Research is a collaborative and transformative process, and I am grateful to my students, colleagues, and the Laurentian community for their support and engagement in pushing the boundaries of architectural knowledge,” Gaber said in the release.

“Being recognized for work that I am deeply passionate about is both an honour and a privilege."
