Hearst to expand broadband network

Funding of $1.3 million from the NOHFC will let community install fibre-optic system

The province is providing $1.3 million to help the community of Hearst expand its broadband capabilities.

Hearst Wi-Fibe Corporation will use the funds to install a fibre-optic network to boost internet and broadband Ethernet speeds in the area.

The improvements are expected to bring provide social and economic benefits to residents and businesses and enhance the community's investment readiness. The project will also create six full-time jobs in the area.

“I am pleased that the province is able to invest in this project, so that our residents will have access to modern communications and be able to share in the social and economic advantages that this new digital infrastructure will bring,” said Tania Cossette, CEO of the Hearst Wi-Fibe Corporation, in a news release.

The funds come from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.’s Strategic Economic Infrastructure Program.
