Sudbury-area post-secondary schools were able to upgrade their labs and equipment in the last school year thanks to a provincial investment of more than $10 million.

“This support will ensure students at Laurentian University, NOSM University, Cambrian College and Collège Boréal have access to modern instructional equipment to meet business and industry standards, increase student access to micro-credentials and enhance the overall student experience,” said MPP Vic Fedeli.

“By investing in post-secondary infrastructure, we are not only supporting our local economy, but ensuring students develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.”

Colleges and universities can use the funding for projects that support the renewal and modernization of campuses including major building systems upgrades, heating and ventilating system upgrades, and mechanical and electrical system upgrades.

The funds can also be used to buy instructional equipment and materials, such as new computers and software for teaching purposes, specialized equipment, or machinery for use in labs and classrooms, and tools for shops.

Capital investments include the following:

  •  $3,470,000 for Laurentian University to help with their virtual reality and multimedia labs;
  •  $3,153,000 for Cambrian College to help with their health simulation lab, and structural repairs;
  •  $2,257,000 for Collège Boréal to help with their Shkode Indigenous Pavilion and renovating a room to house an ambulance simulator; and
  •  $1,188,000 for NOSM University to help with their state-of-the-art upgrades for six patient simulation rooms, upgrading water filling stations and fountains, and modernizing the Indigenous culture room.

"I want to thank the Government of Ontario, and especially Minister Vic Fedeli, for the ongoing support of Cambrian College and today's announcement of $3 million toward critical infrastructure here at Cambrian,” said Cambrian president Kristine Morrissey in a press release.

“This added financial support allows us to ensure the integrity of our physical campus and ensure our faculty, students and staff have the best resources possible to succeed academically and professionally.”

“Collège Boréal is especially thankful to the provincial government for its dedication to providing high-quality post-secondary education,” said Collège Boréal president Daniel Giroux.

“This commitment is crucial in addressing labour shortages in key sectors. Moreover, this support benefits all Ontarians by promoting economic development in our regions, enhancing their overall well-being and fulfillment.”

"This funding underscores our commitment to providing students with technology and resources essential for skill development and career readiness,” said Laurentian president Lynn Wells.

“The integration of advanced molecular analysis tools, a virtual reality laboratory, and a multimedia lab will ensure our students are at the forefront of innovation. By equipping them with the latest technology, we are enhancing their educational experiences and preparing them to excel in their future careers. We are thankful for the contributions from the provincial government."

“We are immensely grateful to MPP Fedeli and the Ontario government for their continued investment in NOSM University,” said NOSM dean Dr. Sarita Verma. “These critical funds ensure that our students receive a high-quality education both online and in safe, modern, and sustainable facilities designed for their success.”
