The Sudbury chapter of Women in Mining celebrated local women for their contributions to the mining industry on Nov. 21.
Held at the United Steelworkers Hall, the inaugural Women in Diversity Gala recognized women “who have demonstrated excellence in mentorship, leadership and commitment to diversity within the sector.”
“The Women in Diversity Gala is an opportunity to celebrate the incredible achievements of women in mining and amplify the importance of diversity in this traditionally male-populated industry,” Brianne Valdez, vice-chair of Women in Mining Sudbury, said in a news release.
“By recognizing trailblazers and supporting students, we are paving the way for a more inclusive and innovative future in mining.”
The awards and this year’s winners included:
- Mentorship Award – Genevieve Sulatycky, environmental superintendent at IAMGOLD
- Trailblazer Award – Kimberly Dwyer, front line supervisor at Vale
- Indigenous Trailblazer Award – Jennifer Constant, chief of Mattagami First Nation
Five women were also selected to receive Student Trailblazer Awards, which come with a $2,000 bursary. They include:
- Aysa Samareh Abolhassani
- Anosha Rangalla
- Brianna Brohm
- Kimia Kariman
- Navraj Kaur
Women in Mining is a non-profit organization with chapters around the world whose mandate is to support, inspire and empower women in the mining industry through networking, mentorship, and advocacy.
