North Bay city council has taken steps to purchase more than nine hectares of land from the Canadian National Railway.
City council has allocated $50,000 from this year's budget to complete an environmental assessment of CN property. Pending the outcome of the assessment, the city intends to accept CN's offer to sell the property for $1.
The property extends from the Ontario Northland Railway line to Timmins Street. Possible soil contamination of the rail lands has prompted council to further study the soil on the property.
Officials say CN has extended the offer to July 15.
