In an effort to reduce the number of maintenance and production staff at its Kidd Creek mine in Timmins, Falconbridge Ltd. is offering workers a chance to transfer to operations in Sudbury. The company opted to provide the transfers rather than issue layoff notices, a company spokesperson says. Over the next three years more than 100 positions are expected to open in the company's Sudbury operations, through normal attrition. Workers who are transferred to Sudbury will work on special projects, which would normally be carried out by contractors.
