Support is growing for a year-round firefighter training facility in Timmins. The interest stems from the success of local firefighters at the Firefit Combat Challenge Competition in July, and Northern College's introduction of a pre-service firefighter education program. The college has initiated talks with the city, province and other communities to discuss partnership opportunities, which could develop over the next few years. An informal committee has been formed to discuss the possibilities, including establishing a temporary, mobile facility in the form of a tractor-trailer in which to train volunteer forces.
A more permanent facility would likely include a smoke house.
