A merger in the grain-handling business may cost some jobs in Thunder Bay, according to the United Steelworkers Union. Though no details have been announced by Agricore and United Grain Growers, who completed their merger in early November to form Agricore United, the union believes the merger could lead to closures of some facilities in the city. With three terminals on the Thunder Bay waterfront, the two companies will divest themselves of seven primary elevators in Western Canada and a port terminal in Vancouver. The merger has been approved by the Federal Competition Bureau.
