Toromont Cat has been recognized by Cambrian College for its contributions to student education.
The Sudbury school bestowed the company with its highest honour, the Dr. Fred Sheridan Award, during Cambrian’s convocation ceremonies on May 23. Branch manager Denis Degagne accepted the award on behalf of the company.
Toromont has been a committed partner of Cambrian College for more than 10 years, with both the company and its employees having a positive impact on Cambrian College students, according to a news release. Toromont employees serve on Cambrian’s Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Program Advisory Committee; the company provides $5,000 annually for student awards and another $5,000 for the purchase of tools and equipment for Cambrian shops; it hires co-op students; and Toromont employees serve as judges for regional skills competitions.
“Toromont Cat is the embodiment of an industry partner that believes in contributing to education,” Cambrian president Sylvia Barnard said in the release. “The company truly recognizes the value that workforce-ready graduates bring to industry across the nation, and it has an outstanding track record of investing in students. Toromont and its employees have made a tremendous difference in the educational experience of our students, and Cambrian is very thankful.”
Introduced in 1992, the Dr. Fred Sheridan Award is named for a man who helped establish Cambrian College. Before his death in 1990, Dr. Sheridan devoted 50 years of service to numerous educational institutions, boards, and associations in Northern Ontario.
