With the swing of a golf club, Miners for Cancer has raised more than $60,000 for equipment, patient care and research in Northern Ontario.
“This has been our largest and most successful golf tournament to date, and we couldn’t have done this without the help of the 180 participants and the over 40 local businesses — mostly mining-related — that either sponsored the event or donated prizes,” president Wayne Tonelli said in a news release.
The solely volunteer-based group that started in 1996 has since organized annual inter-mining industry hockey tournaments, golf tournaments and galas that have enabled workers from various mining organizations to get together in a social environment outside the workplace while at the same time raising much-needed funds for cancer-related causes.
