A fledgling phone company is delivering cellular service to Wawa. Ideal Communications is distributing the service for Superior Wireless in the community on Lake Superior's eastern shore.
More than 70 people signed up for the service in late July. The company's communication tower, located at the former Helen Mine site, reaches a 60-kilometre radius, provided weather conditions are good.
The company plans to extend cellular service up Highway 17 north to White River, though no timetable is scheduled.
Outside Wawa's service area, there are cell coverage gaps on Highway 17 south to Sault Ste. Marie, on Highway 17 north to Manitouwadge and on Highway 101 to Timmins.
