It will be a merry Christmas after all for Essar Steel Algoma employees in Sault Ste. Marie who were laid off from their jobs.
“We are currently working with a full staffing contingent. Those employees previously laid off have been called back to work,” wrote Brenda Stenta, Essar Steel Algoma corporate communications manager, in an email to SooToday on Dec. 6.
Between 70 and 85 of the company’s employees received layoff notices from the mill in early September.
Those layoffs, the company stated at the time, were the result of a drop in demand for plate steel, along with low-priced, dumped imports of steel.
That was followed, later in September, by a temporary layoff of 300 to 330 employees due to blast furnace issues.
