North Bay’s Mining Week kicks off in mid-May with an awards gala recognizing a local mining sector personality.
The May 15 event scheduled for the Best Western Inn will kick off a week’s worth of community breakfasts, after-work events, school presentations and static displays of mining equipment. Mining Week is a public awareness campaign of the local sector’s contribution to the North Bay economy and, more importantly, to highlight career opportunities in the mining sector, says organizer Louise Lowe, also a representative of the Canadian Diamond Drilling Association in North Bay.
“With youth migrating out, they don’t really realize the trades available in mining,” says Lowe, who is preparing to distribute 500 “Mining in Box” freebies to students in the Blue Sky Region listing the 46 careers in mining, their educational requirements and salaries.
