Dr. John R. McCarthy and Dr. Laverne Smith were honoured by the Nipissing University Alumni Association on June 8 for their career achievements and present stature in their communities.
"Current students and alumni can look up to both Dr. McCarthy and Dr. Smith as exemplary models of what can be accomplished through education and hard work," Dr. Dave Marshall, Nipissing University president, said. "These are two individuals have taken the adage of lifelong learning to heart; education has been a constant thread in their lives and has been vital to their achievements."
McCarthy was instrumental in the creation of the John R. McCarthy Lecture Series in Education, establishing the criteria for the lecture series and contributing an endowment fund for financial support.
Smith was the first woman named to hold the position of dean of education in the 200-year history of the University of New Brunswick. She is also the first woman named dean of education in the 93-year history of teacher education in North Bay.
