West Nipissing council supported a proposed $8.5-million facility that would celebrate hockey in northeastern Ontario.
According to a spokesman for Hockey Heritage North, the project has received a commitment from FedNor and negotiations are underway to secure funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.
About $2 million must be raised through public support and businesses will be asked to become sponsors.
The facility will feature a resource centre where photographs, videos and historical information will be archived and displayed. It will also have a fun zone with technology-based, hands-on activities and a theatre, as well as an outdoor rink. The spokesperson said the committee is working closely with the Hockey Hall of Fame and has received the support of 45 municipalities in the northeast.
