The City of North Bay has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for a new community and recreation centre, which will feature a twin-pad arena.

The value of the project is being estimated at $30 million.

Applicants are asked to submit tenders encompassing architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, sustainability/energy, civil, landscape architectural and costing work for the new facility, which will be integrated with the existing Steve Omischl Sports Complex.

Located in the city’s south end, the Steve Omischl Sports Complex was completed in 2011.

The state-of-the-art facility features three baseball diamonds and three soccer fields, including one lined for football, located on an 80-acre site in the East end of the city. The new arena will complement existing amenities.

The deadline for submissions is Aug. 7.

“The new community centre and twin-pad arena in West Ferris will improve access to sport and recreation opportunities for the citizens of North Bay, and add to the already wonderful quality of life we enjoy in our great city,” said Coun. Johanne Brousseau, chair of council's Community Services Committee, in a July 16 news release.

A contract for the architectural and engineering services is expected to be awarded in September, 2019.

The city said public open houses would be held through the design phase, which will also help refine the overall cost to build the facility.

Construction is then expected to get underway by the fall of 2020.
