Low water levels in Lake Huron are being blamed for a delay in service of the Chi-Cheemaun ferry.
The ferry, which runs between South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island and Tobermory in Bruce County, is one of two links to the island, and is a vital component of the area’s tourism industry.
Service, which was scheduled to start this Friday, May 3, has been postponed until at least May 10, according to a statement issued by the Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC), which runs the ferry service.
The OSTC has said it will go ahead with its sold-out Spring Repositioning Cruise event, scheduled for May 2, because “water levels have risen sufficiently to permit safe docking of the vessel in its light condition with passengers only. Passengers will disembark in Tobermory and travel back to Owen Sound by bus, as advertised."
The ferry docks and fenders are owned and maintained by Transport Canada.
