The airports in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury have received federal funding to make some upgrades to the facilities.
The Sault facility received $1,022,640 for the replacement of a runway sweeper, snowblower, an airfield rotating beacon, wind direction indicators, approach light transformers, and for modifications to the combined services building to accommodate fire trucks.
The sweeper and snowblower will ensure the timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways; the fire shelter keeps the aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle and equipment dry and frost free for quick access, while the other equipment will ensure the continued safe operation of the airport for passengers, employees, medical evacuations, and firefighting operations.
In Sudbury, the airport received $169,975 for the purchase of a sand spreader and truck.
This equipment will ensure timely and effective sand spreading operations, which increases friction on runway and taxiway surfaces for the management of snow, slush and ice on runways and taxiways. The equipment will ultimately support safe airport operation for passengers, employees, medical evacuations, and firefighting operations during winter months at the airport.
