Potash continues to drive marine traffic through the Port of Thunder Bay.

Shipments of the fertilizer were up 31 per cent in June compared to the same month in 2022, according to a news release from the Thunder Bay Port Authority.

During the 2022 shipping season, potash shipments through the Lake Superior port hit a 32-year high.

Despite an encouraging month, the authority said potash shipments to date still lag behind last year’s pace.

June grain shipments are up 10 per cent over the same time last year with 760,000 tonnes transitting the port so far since the start of the shipping season.

The authority said inbound cargoes of wind turbine components “continue to move at a steady pace” with 734 tonnes of this freight landing on the dock, destinated for Western Canada.

Seven cruise ships have visited Thunder Bay so far this year, on a good trajectory from the nine ships that made port calls the entire 2022 season.
