The MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry welcomed aboard more vehicles and passengers during its 50th year in operation.
Through the 2024 season, 2.35 per cent more vehicles used the ferry, while 2.86 per cent more passengers boarded, for a total of 68,087 vehicles and 186,866 passengers.
By comparison, by the end of September 2023, 50,000 vehicles and more than 137,000 passengers had used the ferry.
This made for an “incredible 2024 sailing year,” according to the Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC), the Crown corporation that owns and operates the ferry.
“The season was packed with musicians, guest speakers, and fun-filled events celebrating and saluting her 50th anniversary. Only one sailing was cancelled due to weather,” the OSTC said in a news release.
“The Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC) applauds the exemplary crew and staff for their dedication, commitment, and care for passengers, safety and the operation of the Chi-Cheemaun.”
Launched on Sept. 29, 1974, the Chi-Cheemaun carries passengers between South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island and Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula, from May to October every year.
It provides an integral transportation option for travellers moving between southern Ontario and the North, but has become a popular tourist attraction in its own right, offering a variety of specialty cruises and other activities to attract visitors.
The 2024 sailing season closed on Oct. 20. The Chi-Cheemaun sailed into the Owen Sound harbour on Oct. 21, where it will remain through the winter.
Reservations for the 2025 season will open in March, and daily sailings will start on May 2.
