The Ford government has deposited more than $4 million toward skilled training initiatives in Sudbury from its Skills Development Fund.
Last week, the Carpenters Union Local 2486 received $3.2 million to enlarge its training centre.
A news release from provincial economic development minister Vic Fedeli’s office said the funding is earmarked for the construction of a new building for the union’s training administration and staff offices and to convert current office space into classroom to increase training capacity. A new auditorium will be built for training and events.
“This project will essentially double the amount of training that we can provide to our members, whether it be TDA/Apprenticeship training or the relative skills and health and safety training required to staff the upcoming projects that are slated to dot the landscape of Northern Ontario,” said Fedeli in the release.
“The Carpenters are committed to ensuring that our contractors are successful in completing their projects on time, and on budget, with quality work done safely – this is all achieved through member training at our training centre,” said Cameron Deering, local union coordinator with UBC Local 2486.
On Oct. 29, the province delivered $812,668 to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1687 in Sudbury for their Inclusive Pathways to Electrical Excellence in Northeastern Ontario expansion program.
The program will train 48 students from the Sudbury Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board for in-demand careers in the electrical trades sector.
In partnership with the IBEW local, the program will encourage female youth to join the electrical trades. At program’s end, eight student participants will be offered electrical apprenticeships with the IBEW. The funding will also aid the union in developing training programs and with equipment purchases used to train apprentices.
