Starting Nov. 29, more provincial money will be available to help build new skilled trades training centres across Ontario.
On Nov. 12, the province announced that's the date it will open up $74 million through the Capital Stream of its Skills Development Fund. This marks the second intake for this stream.
Eligibility includes building, expanding or retrofitting facilities for workers in the trades, including construction, manufacturing technology and health care.
One recent recipient of Skills Development Fund money is the Carpenters Union Local 2486 in Sudbury, which recently received $3.2 million to enlarge its training centre.
Along with this new intake, the province said it's introducing a streamlined application process, including a mechanism to help with the costs of developing construction proposals, such as design drawings and technical plans.
The province said the Fund will also now accept proposals year-round.
“With one in three tradespeople retiring over the coming years, we must pass on the skills and expertise from the golden generation of skilled tradespeople to the next generation of workers,” Labour Minister Dave Piccini said in a news release.
“With a new, second round of our Skills Development Fund Capital Stream, we are going to kick Ontario’s training capacity into high gear, training over one million workers for in-demand careers in every corner of Ontario.”
