RED ROCK — Looking to plan your next stop on the Lake Superior Circle Tour?
What was once known as the Quebec Lodge in Red Rock has now been rebranded The Lodge following a makeover from the BMI Group in an effort to ignite greater tourism in Red Rock and Nipigon and showcase what the region has to offer.
The Lodge officially opened for booking on May 15.
There are six rooms currently available to book — each room featuring its own unique name and setup including: The Jackpine, Split Rock, Gapen’s, The Wolf, The Jesse, and The Frazer.
The Jackpine and Split Rock feature a single queen bed while the other four rooms have two.
Emily Crack, manager of The Lodge, shared her insight about the building itself and described The Lodge as a bed and breakfast/fishing lodge.
“A lot of the renovations are what you don’t see: upgrades to the electrical, plumbing, we’ve also fully refurnished it,” she said.
“It’s very cozy, very campy. I really love it here.”
Crack said The Lodge was originally constructed in 1937 as an exclusive getaway for local mill executives until a new owner bought the property and opened it to the public.
She used the words “romantic” and “idyllic” to explain how it feels to stay at The Lodge now.
“We’re just trying to grow with that and get the public out as much as we can to come and visit us,” she said.
While The Lodge is sure to bring in a steady stream of summer travellers, there are other projects keeping the BMI Group busy as well — such as continued development of the former Norampac linerboard mill site into a new port, and plans to build over 100 homes in Red Rock.
In terms of new updates the ministry of the environment, conservation and parks (MECP) has reportedly lifted their environmental order on the former mill site following a visit from senior environmental officer Kristen Braun.
Appearing before Red Rock’s town council at a recent meeting, Peter Whitby, general manager of Red Rock Developments Inc., provided a brief update.
“They’re impressed with our work ... I’m very pleased to share that with the community. There was about $4 million worth of cleanup last year, so our team is really proud of that,” he said.
With the launch of the new Lodge and other developments well on their way, the area is certain to attract many new visitors and potential residents.
