North of Superior Climbing Company was named one of the big winners at the seventh annual Tourism Sault Ste. Marie awards last week.
The company, which is owned and operated by Shaun Parent, was named Business of the Year at the Oct. 27 gala.
Parent provides rock and ice climbing expeditions in Agawa Canyon, Montreal River and Batchewana Bay. He regularly accommodates 200 to 400 clients a year and has been featured in Toronto and New York newspapers.
Goulais Bay paddlers Gary and Joanie McGuffin received the Tourism Award of Excellence for their long-standing impact and entrepreneurship in developing the area's tourism industry. The McGuffin's, renowned nature photographers and writers, have championed the Great Lakes Heritage Coast concept and the conservation movement along Ontario's waterways for more than 25 years.
Tom Coulterman won the Tourism Ambassador Award for his volunteer efforts in the local curling community including his instrumental work in the city's successful bid for the 2010 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
