The Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM) has released a preliminary agenda for its 2022 conference.
Scheduled to take place May 9-11 at the Best Western hotel in North Bay, this year's conference will return to an in-person format, following last year’s virtual event.
This year’s theme is ‘Big Data Means Big Ideas.’
Appearing as the keynote speaker is Doug Griffiths, president and CEO of 13 Ways Inc. and the author of 13 Ways to Kill Your Community.
The book stems from Griffiths’ travels across Alberta as a Member of the Legislative Assembly Assembly (MLA) when he was tasked to create a rural development strategy for the province.
His observations tell of the well-intentioned but self-defeating actions communities take that can stymie their growth and success.
During a Northern leaders debate, representatives of the province’s leading political parties will discuss issues of regional importance. Three leaders have already been confirmed to attend.
FONOM is accepting suggestions for debate questions from members for consideration. The deadline to submit is April 29.
There will also be presentations and updates on:
- cultural mindfulness;
- the Nuclear Waste Management Organization's safety transportation plan;
- the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation;
- insurance pricing;
- a path forward for mental health, homelessness and addiction; and
- FedNor.
Planned activities include a tour of the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission shop, a reception at the recently opened Cascades Casino, and the annual general meeting and banquet.
A more detailed conference schedule is expected to be released shortly.
FONOM, which represents 100 communities in northeastern Ontario, works to improve municipal government in the North. Its annual conference provides an opportunity for Northern Ontario municipal representatives to share the latest information and best practices on common issues facing the region.
