Sudbury will use $150,000 from FedNor to pay for a “fact-finding mission” to help Northern Ontario communities capitalize on new opportunities in the mining sector.
Announced on Oct. 9 by Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe, the funds will support the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in preparing a case study on the regulatory and policy environment for mining and related industries in Northern Ontario.
OECD is an international organization that conducts research into and advocates for better policies to improve the lives of people around the globe.
The OECD Conference of Mining Regions and Cities is taking place in Sudbury Oct. 8-11.
“Sudbury has a rich history rooted in the mining sector that has expanded over the years to include a diverse mining supply and services industry,” Lapointe said in a news release.
“By supporting this study, the Government of Canada is demonstrating its commitment to the wellbeing of Northern Ontario and ensuring that the sector will continue to thrive, along with the communities and people that play a crucial role in its success.”
As part of the Northern Ontario case study, researchers will review the regulatory and policy environment for mining and related industries and come up with recommendations for improvement for the federal and provincial governments.
It will build on the OECD’s previous work, which includes six case studies from regions around the world, as part of its Mining Regions and Cities Initiative.
