An individual who tested positive for COVID-19 in the Kirkland Lake area last weekend works at the Macassa Mine.
According to a Dec. 16 Kirkland Lake Gold memorandum sent to the workforce at the mine, the individual, who worked a shift at Shaft No. 4, left the site on the morning of Friday, Dec. 11 with no symptoms. The next day, symptoms began to occur and individual received a COVID-19 test. The individual was later informed of a positive test.
The memorandum from Evan Pelletier, Kirkland Lake Gold's vice-president of mining, said the Temiskaming Health Unit was investigating the case in conducting the contact tracing of where the individual may have been exposed to the virus or who this individual had later come in contact with.
"We have been advised by the THU that the risk of transmission at our operation is considered low at the present time due to our extensive health and safety protocols, including the installation of protective plexiglass," said Pelletier, who urged workers to be remain "diligent" in complying with protocols, social distancing, mask wearing, and cleaning and sanitizing.
