COVID-19 outbreak at Detour Lake Mine

A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Kirkland Lake Gold's Detour Lake Mine. 

So far, there have been six confirmed cases at the site, according to the Porcupine Health Unit. The cases are linked to the workplace.

"The PHU is working closely with  Kirkland Lake Gold Detour Lake Mine to ensure the infection prevention and control measures are in place and management is taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19," reads the announcement.

The Detour Lake open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane.

Today, 34 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the region.

To date, there have been 956 confirmed cases in the region. Of those, 705 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are 225 known active cases — 183 in Timmins, 23 in the region of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, 17 in the James and Hudson Bay region, one in the Kapuskasing area and one in the Hearst, Hornepayne area.

A vaccination blitz is being held this weekend in Timmins and includes free bus or cab rides to the clinics.
