City Welding, a Sudbury-based fabrication shop in operation since 1972, has been named Cambrian College's Employer of Distinction in 2022.

A Sudbury fabrication shop is being recognized for its role in training generations of trades workers.

City Welding, a 50-year-old fabrication and welding operation in the city's north end, was named Cambrian College's 2022 Employer of Distinction on Feb. 8 at the school's annual Career Fair Conference.

Georges and Gisele Brouillette founded City Welding in 1972 in their home garage, fabricating and installing trailer hitches, and repairing construction equipment.

Today, the company operates out of the Elisabella Street industrial park at the northeast end of Sudbury.

The company offers fabrication and repair work, on or off-site, on a variety of metals, including mild steel, aluminum and stainless, and primarily serves the mining, construction, oil and gas, forestry, and energy industries.

Georges Brouillette retired in 2015, and his son, Robert, now serves as owner and president.

“City Welding has been a hallmark of the industry and a leader in the trades in Greater Sudbury for half a decade,” said Renee Scott, Cambrian’s director of student success, in a news release

“Robert Brouillette has done so much for the community and for Cambrian, promoting the trades, taking our students on placement, and being an employer of choice for our graduates. Congratulations to City Welding, especially during a year of celebration for the company.”

Brouillette said he was "humbled and honoured” by the gesture, noting that the company has worked with Cambrian for a decade.

“It’s been a very good journey for me personally and for the company,” he said in the release.

“We have to view students as the future. We hire graduates. I think as employers, we have a responsibility to help students succeed, and I will continue to push other employers to get involved and support students.”

Previous winners of the Cambrian College Employer Award of Distinction include Ionic Mechatronics (2021), Hard-Line Solutions (2020), and BESTECH (2019).
