Northern cities make the grade for business startups

Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie among top 1,000 cities globally deemed welcoming for business

Three of Northern Ontario’s major cities have ranked within the top 1,000 best cities worldwide for startups.

According to the Canadian insurance company HelloSafe, Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie all have what it takes to help business startups succeed.

The company, which develops online comparison tools for things like insurance, investment, savings and credit products, made their ranking looking at a city’s quality and quantity of offerings, as well as its business environment.

Of the Canadian cities included on the list, Thunder Bay came in at 26th place, with a score of 336 and a world rank of 731, while Sudbury landed in the 30th spot, with a score of 253 and a world rank of 821. Sault Ste. Marie rounded out the trio taking 36th spot, with a score of 192 and a world rank of 919.

Overall, 41 Canadian cities made the list, and 51 per cent of those are located in Ontario.

Canada ranks as the fourth best country for startups in the world, after the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel.
