An Indigenous housing complex in North Bay is being recognized for architectural excellence by the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA).
Suswin Village, a transitional housing complex built and managed by the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre, is one of nine projects selected as part of the OAA's 2024 Queen's Park Picks program.
Through the annual initiative, Members of Provincial Parliament “highlight their favourite architectural gems from their ridings, showcasing exceptional buildings and structures in celebration of architecture in Ontario.”
This year's theme was ‘Housing’, with 32 suggestions submitted by 29 MPPs. Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli nominated Suswin Village.
Designed by the North Bay firm Larocque Elder Architects, Architectes Inc., Suswin Village — which means “nest” in Ojibwe — is the first housing project in Canada built and managed by a friendship centre.
Completed in 2023, the 30-room transitional housing facility offers on-site cultural, mental health, and addictions support for residents, as well as social skills, education, and employment training.
“Designed with Indigenous values in mind, it features geothermal heating and spaces for traditional practices underscoring the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability,” notes the OAA in a news release.
“By respecting the immediate environment and drawing on local inspiration, the community facility provides residents with a quality community space that is both sustainable, functional, and informed by context.”
According to LEA, its design incorporates best practices around sustainable design, including the incorporation of natural ventilation, durable cladding materials, highly insulated exterior wall and roof assemblies, energy-efficient triple-glazed window units, LED lighting complete with occupancy sensors, and sensor-activated, low-flow plumbing fixtures.
Suswin's landscaping work incorporates drought-tolerant, native trees and plants, and a large communal fire pit for use by residents and staff.
