Thunder Bay, Niagara breweries to merge

Sleeping Giant Brewing Company, Newark Brewing partner on distribution, sales and collaboration

THUNDER BAY — The Sleeping Giant Brewing Company is joining forces with a brewing operation based in the Niagara region.

The Thunder Bay firm has submitted a letter of intent to merge with Newark Brewing Company Ltd. of Beamsville.

The two companies said they will continue to operate at their respective locations with a partnership focused on distribution, sales and collaboration.

Sleeping Giant Brewing, based on Macdonnell Street, was founded in 2012 by Andrea and Kyle Mulligan.

The company says it's committed to brewing locally, utilizing Canadian ingredients and supporting the community.

Newark Brewing was established by Griffin Data in 2018, and produces European-style beers at a 10,000-square-foot facility opened in 2022.

In a social media post, Sleeping Giant said, "We couldn’t be more excited to join forces! Together, we’ll continue to deliver the beer you know and love across Ontario and Manitoba, while bringing new flavours and styles inspired by our shared passion for craft beer. Stay tuned for exciting updates as we embark on this journey together."

In a statement announcing the merger, CEO Drea Mulligan said it will lead to opportunities "to create effective synergies, to scale and grow, and to increase market share ... both organizations have an amazing set of core values and a team that shares the same dedication and passion as the founders."

Griffin Data said, "Sleeping Giant offers an amazing lineup of beers that are quite complementary to what we brew at Newark. Both companies are very strong individually, but it is going to be extremely exciting seeing what we can accomplish together."
