Provincial funding from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund will help the growth of two agricultural businesses in northwestern Ontario.

On July 30, Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford announced $80,935 for Cornell Veterinary Medicine Professional Corporation and Emo Feed Service Ltd.

Cornell Veterinary Medicine Professional Corporation, which is receiving $54,004, will establish a mobile large-animal veterinary clinic offering specialized services including embryo transfer and bull breeding exams to beef producers.

“Expansion of veterinary services in Northwestern Ontario is critical for growth in the region’s livestock agriculture sector,” Rebecca Cornell, owner of Cornell Veterinary Medicine Professional Corporation, said in a news release.

“I’m so grateful to receive funding and work with Kingsford Vet Services to offer new veterinary services to the area.”

Cornell said the funds would help host veterinary students from across North America for a specialized beef calving rotation each spring.

Emo Feed Service Ltd., which is receiving $26,931, will expand its operating space and buy new oil pressing equipment and feed bins to manufacture high protein livestock feed.

“With this equipment we can better support and service our local farmers by using local grown grains and turning them into locally produced complete feeds,” John Sawatzky, president of Emo Feed Service Ltd., said in the release.

“This helps us not only to support local farmers but also create local jobs.”
