Agreement will see more flights into the remote community

Fort Severn members held a vote to join the North Star Air network.

Ontario’s most northerly community has become business partners with North Star Air.

Community members in Fort Severn First Nation voted overwhelmingly to form a strategic business partnership with the regional passenger and freight air carrier.

The vote resulted in the signing of a letter of understanding for revenue sharing agreement with members of the Fort Severn Council.

The agreement will see added flights into the Hudson Bay coastal community of 704, located 855 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay.

“Our goal is to provide you with safe, reliable air service,” said North Star Air CEO Frank Kelner in an Oct. 21 release.

“With this strategic partnership, Fort Severn can benefit from competitive rates for both passenger service and air cargo.”

The North Star Air release said community members had first reached out to them to find ways for the airline to provide service to their community, and those efforts led to a meeting where Fort Severn councillors agreed to follow the lead of their community.

The release said it’s hoped this strategic business partnership will benefit Fort Severn economically in assisting those who want to start up small businesses.

The company will also be able to provide inter-community service between Fort Severn and Peawanuk First Nation on a weekly basis using the company’s large Basler BT-67 passenger and cargo aircraft.
