Two Kenora area First Nation organizations received more than $550,000 in FedNor funding to support Aboriginal business development.
The Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation (formerly Rat Portage) will be completing construction of a community development centre with FedNor funding of $490,000.
The 9,800-square-foot building will serve as a multi-use facility and business centre as well as a central point for the delivery of community economic programs and activities including space for new business ventures.
The Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council received $64,966 to establish a natural resources board governance structure to develop opportunities in activities such as forestry, fisheries and mining. The Sioux Narrows organization provides advisory and technical services to six member First Nations. The resources board will help facilitate the entry of communities into commercial activities.
“These investments will assist First Nation communities and entrepreneurs to capitalize on business development opportunities, including those offers by the natural resources sector,” said Greg Rickford, Kenora MP and the minister in charge of FedNor in a Feb. 9 statement.
