New homes needed in Timmins: mayor

The rapid growth in the City of Timmins stemming from mineral exploration is increasing at such a rate as to strain the availability of places to live, said Christy Marinig, CEO of the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC).

With the city's rental vacancy rate sitting at 1.8 per cent and rapidly tightening, Timmins is in dire need of attracting a developer to build houses in the mid-range price of $150,000-$200,000, a range of construction that's typically been ignored by spec builders.

"There's definitely a need for housing, and I'm not saying the government should be building these, but we need to interest someone in building 100 to 150 affordable homes," said Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren.
