Algoma mayor recognized for long service

Mayor Lynn Watson, mayor of the Township of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional, located in the District of Algoma, has been bestowed a long-service award by the province.

Mayor Lynn Watson, mayor of the Township of Macdonald, Meredith and Aberdeen Additional, located in the District of Algoma, has been bestowed a long-service award by the province.

Watson received the Long-standing Service Award from Rick Bartolucci, minister of municipal affairs and housing, for a career in public service that dates back to 1985.

“The Long-Standing Service Award is a fitting tribute to recognize the hard work and commitment of our locally elected officials,” he said in a news release. “I would like to thank Mayor Watson for his ongoing dedication to public service.”

Watson was first elected as a council member in 1985, before taking the mayor's seat three years later.

In 1995, he played an important role in a sewer and water infrastructure project for Echo Bay that allowed the municipality to grow.

The Algoma District Social Services Administration Board, of which Watson is a member, was successful in constructing a 10-unit seniors' complex, Hurley Haven, in 2006.

The Long-standing Service Awards were established in 2004 and are given to municipally elected officials with at least 25 years of service. A similar program, create in 2006, is available for those who have served for a minimum of 50 years.
