Thunder Bay’s North Star Air announced it has signed a “strategic business agreement” with Webequie First Nation.
Webequie joins nine other First Nation communities in an alliance with the regional passenger and freight carrier. The other communities are Muskrat Dam, Sachigo Lake, Cat Lake, Deer Lake, Neskantaga, North Caribou Lake, Bearskin Lake, Kashechewan and Poplar Hill.
The air carrier released no specific details about this arrangement other than to say it will provide “cost-effective solutions, on-time delivery, security of supply and an overall enhancement in service levels” for the remote community of 800, located 540 kilometres north of Thunder Bay and just west of the Ring of Fire.
In a release, Webequie Chief Cornelius Wabasse said: “As a testament to North Star Air’s commitment to the shared vision of a prosperity north, included in this partnership is a revenue sharing agreement that will provide Webequie the opportunity to re-invest back into our local economy and development.”
North Star CEO Frank Kelner said: “Servicing the North has been a passion of mine for many years and we are delighted for this opportunity to work with Webequie and the other community partners in making the economy of the north vibrant and attractive.
