Postsecondary students from across Canada will arrive in Sudbury this month for an on-the-ground lesson in geoscience in preparation for their future careers in mineral exploration.
Twenty-six students will descend on the city from May 1-16 for the annual Student-Industry Mineral Exploration Workshop (S-IMEW), hosted by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC).
The two-week, all-expenses-paid trip introduces upper-year geoscience students to the technical and business perspectives of mineral exploration.
Students will visit mine sites, and get hands-on experiences with regional and exploration mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical sampling techniques, core logging, and more.
They’ll also take a field trip to Val-d’Or, Que., where they’ll learn about volcanic-associated massive sulfide deposits in the Abitibi Greenstone belt.
Participants will additionally get an opportunity to meet and network with key industry representatives, potential future employers and mentors.
This marks the 15th anniversary of the S-IMEW program, which was launched by PDAC in 2007.
The program took a two-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned in 2023.
